Nieuwsblad and De Standaard have won awards at the 63rd edition of the Belfius Press Awards, one of Belgium’s most prestigious annual press awards.

Nieuwsblad took the prize in the Dutch-Language Radio & Podcast category with De Iraanse Spion (The Iranian Spy). This three-part series, produced with Diplodokus, reconstructs the story of an Iranian espionage network in Europe and draws a link to the release of Belgian NGO worker Olivier Vandecasteele from prison in Iran.

De Standaard received two awards. In the Digital & Interactive category there was a prize for Van Groen naar Grijs (From Green to Grey), a data-driven series on the loss of open space in Flanders. Using satellite imagery and artificial intelligence, De Standaard mapped how much open space in Flanders was lost between 2018 and 2023. The jury described it as an “in-depth analysis” and praised “the way the before-and-after situation was visualised”. Van Groen naar Grijs is a project in collaboration with the European research platform Arena Climate.

In addition, photographer Gert Jochems won in the Photography category for his reports from Ukraine.

Finally, De Standaard journalist Kasper Goethals received a special mention in the Print and Web category for De Nieuwe Orde (The New Order), an international series that maps a new world order.
