In a media landscape undergoing fundamental change, Mediahuis België intends to adapt its organisation and cost structure to the new reality. The proposed transformation plan is designed to create the financial space needed to continue investing in independent journalism, strong news brands and digital growth.
News media companies are facing sharply rising costs. Distribution costs have increased by approximately €25 million over the past three years, despite declining print volumes. Labour costs have also risen by around 30% over the past five years. At the same time, advertising revenues are under pressure as international platforms continue to intensify competition. To safeguard its long-term financial health and preserve room for investment, Mediahuis België considers structural measures to be necessary.
Through this transformation plan, the company aims to sharpen its focus on its journalistic core, continue its digital growth trajectory and make its operations simpler and more efficient. Independent and distinctive journalism, strong news brands and sustainable relationships with readers will remain at the heart of the organisation.
The proposed measures may have an impact on employees. Mediahuis Belgium currently employs 853 people. The proposed plan could result in a reduction of 29 full-time equivalents (FTEs), potentially affecting up to 35 people. Mediahuis België has therefore today announced its intention to initiate a collective redundancy procedure. The company’s objective is to minimise compulsory redundancies.
Mediahuis België employees were informed today about the proposed transformation plan. Consultations with employee representatives have been initiated. In the coming period the company will focus on providing further explanation, dialogue and consultation regarding the proposed measures and their potential consequences.
Koen Verwee, CEO Mediahuis België: “I realise that this proposed plan primarily affects our employees and may create uncertainty. At the same time, it is our responsibility to ensure that Mediahuis België remains strong and financially healthy in the long term. Independent and distinctive journalism is, and will remain, at the heart of our organisation. In a society confronted with disinformation, polarisation and an overwhelming abundance of information, trustworthy journalism is more important than ever. This plan is intended to ensure that we can continue to fulfil that societal role in the years ahead while continuing to invest in quality journalism, strong digital products and lasting relationships with our readers and subscribers.”
